Bananagun’s debut album The True Story of Bananagun (released this summer via Full Time Hobby) was one of the sunshine musical moments of the year – an upbeat shot of global tropical psychedelia that 2020 really needed. Released to a heap of glowing reviews the album has also topped Shindig’s Best of 2020, as well as cropping up in Uncut, Rough Trade and Love Record Stores end of year lists.
The good news for their new found fans is that the Australian group will hit Europe next September and October, with Full Time Hobby releasing a deluxe edition of the album in January on splatter colored vinyl with a limited 7″ of remixes by Maston and Traffik Island. Order that here.
Hailing from Melbourne, but with a sound stretching from 60s and 70s Afrobeat and exotica, the proto-garage rhythmic fury of The Monks and the grooves of Os Mutantes, there’s an enticing lost world exoticism to the music of Bananagun. It’s the sort of stuff that could’ve come from a dusty record crate of hidden gems; yet the group are no revivalists.
The band’s seemingly innocuous name has an underlying message of connectivity that matches the universality of the music. “It’s like non-violent combat! Or the guy who does a stick up, but it’s just a banana, not a gun, and he tells the authorities not to take themselves too seriously.” The new tour announcement marks the first time that Bananagun will get to connect with European audiences.
