Today LA singer-songwriter Paige Calico shares her new track / video “Arm Candy” ahead of her show tonight, June 6, 2018 at the Bootleg. Here are some thoughts from Paige on the song & video:
“Our society can very easily pigeonhole women into feeling like they have a certain role to play and if you choose to sway from it there will be ridicule… or you’ll end up a cat lady alone forever. But there is nothing wrong with going off the beaten path (& cats are rad) and solitude is healthy, not a state of doom. It’s about staying true to you and if a little weed and whiskey helps, go for it.” – Paige Calico
from Director Scarlet Moreno:
“Directing the video for “Arm Candy” was a dream! I love playing with the classic idea of femininity and subtley turning it on its head. Paige’s tongue in cheek lyrics allowed me to take the imagery to really interesting places and inject some dark comedic moments in there that I think resonate as ultimately empowering and fun all at once. Speaking to the Robert Palmer references: I remember the first time I watched those classic Robert Palmer videos as a kid and thinking I wanted to be like those women and not knowing exactly why. Now I realize it’s because of how strong and bold they looked, how they owned their woman-ness in a way I wasn’t used to seeing yet. I love bringing that back with this vid and making it about them and Paige sharing in those moments of power.”
from Producer Jay Blynn:
“It’s a woman’s honest conversation with herself about who she wants to be in this world/ society that takes place over a raw slow drum beat like a heart.”
Bio:
Paige Calico is nostalgia in its sweetest form. Her songs are a haunting blend of self-searching and wry wit in the face of life’s peaks and troughs. Calico grew up on a lake in rural New Jersey and eventually moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. While there, she began her stint as one half of folk duo The Dwells. They self-released two records and spent a year touring across the country in a Chevy Coachman. Eventually the band parted ways, and simultaneously she began working alongside iconic music photographer Henry Diltz, leading to her move to the golden state of California.
Her debut solo EP, 2016’s Crying Diamonds, is made of of six delicately crafted songs combining dark, catchy folk with tones of choral pop and ethereal harmonies. Lead single “The Hard Way,” captures pristinely lush Americana—a gorgeous arrangement warped by just a touch of dirt and grit.
In late 2017, she hunkered down in the studio with Los Angeles producer Yay Blynn to shape three new singles. Her sultry, smoky voice demonstrates a maturity and ease, swirling around shimmering guitars and vintage synths. Her lyrics are humble and human, examining powerful notions of life, love, and uncertainty. That eternal search has lead Paige Calico here, and from this place her journey truly begins.
