Bart Davenport is about to unleash his 7th album, Blue Motel, with his band The Bedazzled. “The House That Built Itself” is the first single taken from LP, and it comes with a video directed by Cassandra Lee Hamilton. Bart shares “The House That Built Itself” track and video today via Self-Titled.
The title, according to Bart, was inspired by a northwest based poet, Chan Plett, who had a line about “ships trying to sink themselves”. The song’s metaphor could have to do with the collapsing of everything and anything around you, be it your personal life or society at large. It’s about being broke – a situation the Californian is definitely all too familiar with. It’s also “speculative fiction” and very Philip K Dick to have a house that can build itself; just add water and watch it grow!
The video shows buildings rising up from the ground. You also see the band members performing in outer space somewhere above it all, seemingly under the haphazard control of producer Aaron M. Olson (L.A. Takedown). This is the band’s second video with director Cassandra Lee Hamilton (the first being “Dust In The Circuits”, from 2014), and she’s like family to them – like a band member whose instrument is the camera. The slapstick chaos you see on screen is not only an appropriate interpretation of the song, but very possibly also a wild, colorful place in Cassie’s brain.
Alluding to Los Angeles with the lights down, Blue Motel is an amalgam sound of ’80s English pop and West Coast yacht rock jams, sprinkled with cinematic flourishes clearly influenced by the understated production of Aaron M. Olson. The jangly pop aesthetic, resplendent with choppy chorus tinted guitar, snappy snares, sax and bass is underlined with life trodden stories about day jobs, dating, financial insecurities, lost innocence and most prominently, time travel. The album is slated for release on vinyl, digital and CD on April 27, 2018, on Lovemonk, Légère Recordings, and Burger Tapes.
