People Get Ready – “Windy Cindy” by Brassland
STREAM: “Windy Cindy” (Stereogum Premiere)
Brooklyn-based four-piece People Get Ready is Steven Reker, Luke Fasano, James Rickman, and Jen Goma. They come from all over the musical map–Reker toured as a dancer and guitarist with David Byrne and Fasano is a former member of Yeasayer. PGR got their start in December 2009 during a run of shows at one of NY’s more influential art houses, The Kitchen. The band’s distinct brand of vivid electronic pop bursts with energy, propelled by swirling and swelling harmonies, hard-to-shake melodies, ornate guitar work and high-energy rhythms set to a vocal ebb and flow led by Reker but harmonized and intensified by the entire band. Their self-titled debut album was recorded by emerging composer/performer/producer Jherek Bischoff in the summer of 2011 at Denniston Hill, a 100+ year old farm house in upstate New York. Bischoff trucked two suitcases of gear to this remote location and recorded them across four rooms of the house while wrangling the spaces incredible acoustic properties.
One quality that makes People Get Ready distinct IS their unique ability to re-define what a band is — to blur boundaries and forge continuing creative bonds with the formidable list of artists whose paths they’ve crossed: Robert Wilson (co-creator of Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach), Julie Mehretu (the painter who created the cover art) and Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) just to name a few. And with Reker’s background in movement, the band invites the influences, ideas, and aesthetics of both ‘contemporary dance’ and ‘indie music’ to thrive within the same performance space – creating opportunity for a different kind of band and dance to come to light. Or, as The New York Times explains “People Get Ready is an experience beyond hearing music in a club or viewing a dance; it is a moving meditation that suggests dreams.” The band will release their debut album on Brassland October 23, 2012.
Here’s what the band’s founder Steven Reker has to say about this track: “Windy Cindy” was inspired by Cindy Sherman’s pictures, her Untitled Film Stills. It’s a livable world she’s made and I got so into them, I mean really into them. The song is about my desire to take her spot in the picture, forever. I try to do it, it’s fine for a bit, but I end up getting tired because I can’t hold the pose as long as she can. And then I imagine myself as one of the inanimate objects — her dress, the glass she’s holding, the match that she strikes, the book she gets off the shelf. The objects are endowed perfectly by the way she handles them. It’s romantic, but not in a lovey-dovey way but in the way the artwork feels…livable.”
