<alt="Woods" />

Woods

With a title like At Echo Lake, the fifth album from New York’s Woods intimates a modern rock aesthetic fully informed by historical manifestations of teenage along with a concomitant feel for the specifics of time and place. The distance between 2007’s At Rear House and 2010’s At Echo Lake may at first seem only semantic but it more properly represents a move from a kind of informal back porch jam ethos to a fully-committed vision of the infinite possibilities of group playing.

Over the past few years Woods have established themselves as an anomaly in a world of freaks. They were an odd proposition even in the outré company of vocalist/guitarist/label owner Jeremy Earl’s Woodsist roster, perpetually out of time, committed to songsmanship in an age of noise, drone and improvisation, to extended soloing, oblique instrumentals and the usurping use of tapes and F/X in an age of dead-end singer-songwriters. Recent live shows have seen them best confuse the two, playing beautifully-constructed songs torn apart by fuzztone jams and odd electronics.

At Echo Lake feels like a diamond-sharp distillation of the turbulent power of their live shows, in much the same way that The Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” single amplified and engulfed the planetary aspect of their improvised takes. Some of the material here - the opening “Blood Dries Darker”, the euphoric “Mornin’ Time” - is so lush that lesser brains would’ve succumbed to the appeal of strings and horns but At Echo Lake is more Fifth Dimension than Notorious Byrd Brothers, nowhere more so than on “From The Horn”, a track that is as beautiful in its assault on form as “Eight Miles High” or Swell Maps’ “Midget Submarines”. But despite the instrumental innovation that the album heralds - G. Lucas Cranes’ psychedelic tapework on “Suffering Season”, guest musician Matthew Valentine’s harmonica and modified banjo/sitar on “Time Fading Lines” - At Echo Lake is all about the vocals.

Woods’ secret weapon is the quality of Earl’s voice, osmosing the naive style of Jad Fair, Jonathan Richman and Neil Young while re-thinking it as a discipline and a tradition. Here he is singing at the peak of his powers, in a high soulful style that is bolstered by heavenly arrangements of backing vocals. At Echo Lake feels like the transmission point for teenage garage from the past to the future. Deformed by contemporary experiments, bolstered by magical traditions from the past, it’s the sound of now, right here, At Echo Lake.

Neon Indian

Neon Indian is Alan Palomo, the 21-year-old synth-wizard who first created waves as VEGA. After writing a batch of off-the-cuff recordings that weren’t quite right as VEGA songs, Palomo released them as Neon Indian and what started as a careless outlet for ideas too offbeat to fit the VEGA mold has since gone on to define a genre. His critically acclaimed début album Psychic Chasms, which was released in October 2009, has been featured in SPIN, Rolling Stone, Wall Street Journal and FADER among others. In Feb. 2010 he made his late night TV debut with a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. “Sleep Paralysist” was written by Neon Indian lead-man Alan Palomo; the track was recorded and produced in collaboration with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear in Brooklyn at Taylor’s elusive musical dungeon, Terrible Studios. This is Neon Indian’s first new offering since the release of Psychic Chasms.

Toro Y Moi

Toro Y Moi (a.k.a. Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick) is the sound the world has been waiting for. This multi-cultural juggernaut gathers up the best musical elements from around the globe- R&B, Indie Rock, Electronic Dance and Psychedelica -and creates something-freaking-else! Over the course of his first groundbreaking full length Causers Of This, Toro Y Moi turns the aforementioned musics upside-down with his breathtakingly innovative approach. The incendiary power of Toro Y Moi’s funky synth and guitar play, pumping digital rhythms and gorgeously bright vocal harmonies makes for a formidable combination. A soon to be masterpiece of a currently unnamed genre.

Bio:
Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Columbia, South Carolina native and resident Chaz Bundick. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design at The University of South Carolina, Chaz decided to push his music further now that he has more time on his hands. His mom came from the Phillipines to the United States, where she met her future husband (who’s African American) in college. They lived in New York City taking in all the wonderful cultural influences the city’s rising underground scene had to offer at the time (late 70s/early 80s). Deciding to slow down and be closer to family, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they had their first child…

Chaz Bundick’s methods are constantly changing and evolving. Heavily influenced by his parent’s vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk. Like most prepubescent teens, he had his punk band and once that died out, the “side project” soon became the main focus.

Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House.

<alt="Light Pollution" />

Light Pollution

Midwesterners often feel obligated to apologize for/complain about their landscape. Chicago’s Light Pollution does not. The contrasting feelings of wonderment and isolation evoked by the frozen Midwestern plains deeply pervade their sound.

23-year-old songwriter James Michael Cicero grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the son of Italian and Spanish Catholics. His grandfather was a first-generation Spanish immigrant trumpet player who moved to Chicago to lead a Big Band; aspirations that did not ensure financial stability. As a result, when Cicero bought his first guitar at the age of seventeen, his father took to locking it in the attic.

Cicero left for college in Dekalb, IL, met drummer Matt Evert, obsessively wrote songs in class, and soon dropped out. Over the following years, the two honed their skills and sensibilities, eventually acquiring Nick Sherman and Jed Robertson; evolving into what is now Light Pollution.

Swirling analog synths, shimmering arpeggios, and washed out tape noise are embedded into combinations of 90’s shoegaze, chillwave, and vocal psych-pop. Thanks to a unique blend of hi-fi and lo-fi tracking and their Midwestern demeanor, they are able to create hazy, psychedelic, layered sounds that set them apart from recent waves of lo-fi pop bands.

Light Pollution is finishing up their full length debut, due out on Carpark this summer. Cicero wrote the album over the course of a long, stoned, agoraphobic winter spent isolated in a heatless warehouse west of Chicago.

<alt="Screaming Females" />

Screaming Females

New Jersey’s Screaming Females have just entered The Hunt Studio in Millstone, NJ to begin work on the band’s fourth full-length, due this Fall via Don Giovanni Records. The band is also hitting the road with Ted Leo soon for a string of shows in late March / early April that will most likely be completely sold out moments after you read this.

Bio:
2009 will go down as the year that everyone-EVERYONE-started to take notice of Screaming Females in the wake of the release of their third LP (and their first on a label of any kind), Power Move (Don Giovanni, April, 2009). From their first TV appearances (dancing with puppets on Chicago’s cult public access TV show, “Chic-a-Go-Go”, then making their national TV debut as a musical guest on MTV’s “It’s On! With Alexa Chung”), first multi-page national print media press and having lead Female Marissa Paternoster be named “Best Shredder in New York City 2009″ by the Village Voice to being the band that everyone from Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses, Dead Weather and Arctic Monkeys personally asked to tour with, 2009’s been quite the weird and exciting year for Screaming Females. After all, they’re doing exactly what they’ve done, the way they’ve always done it…organically, with friends. It’s just that now all of these people are noticing how amazing they are. And they can, y’know, quit their day jobs in lieu of touring all the time and recording new material with both their own band and their side projects because of it. Amen to that, right?

PRESS QUOTES:

“Her name is Marissa Paternoster, and she is 2009’s answer to Sleater-Kinney’s 2006 breakup, using her throaty pipes and serious chops to channel that trio’s femme-shredder legacy to a new generation.”-Rolling Stone

“Screaming Females’ emotionally detailed songs and tight playing push against a slightly muddy sound straight outta the mid-’80s underground.”–SPIN

“The last three “guitar heroes” I saw were women: Marnie Stern, Kaki King, and Marissa Paternoster of the the Screaming Females.”-Sasha Frere-Jones, New Yorker

“The Females recently toured with the Dead Weather; no idea how Jack White had the balls to even walk out onstage after Pasternoster was done with it, or how there was still a stage left at all. Call it Guitar Hero: Riot Grrrl. Bow down.”.”-Village Voice, named Marissa Paternoster NYC’s Best Guitar Shredder 2009

“Marissa Paternoster will not be denied. Her voice, pitched between a loud demand and a scream, hits you between the eyes. In case she didn’t make herself clear, her guitar attacks like a machine-gun. She’s barely 5 feet tall but she absolutely devours the stage, a guitar shredder in the tradition of Antietam’s Tara Key and Chicago’s Alex White.”-Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune

“…songs that reach back to late-1960s power trios, with fuzzed-out riffs and psychedelic guitar solos full of scurrying lines and wah-wah abuse, tempered with an indie-rock concision that shapes the blare into songs. Everything Ms. Paternoster has on her mind - loyalty, anger, horror-movie mayhem, ambition - arrives in a fervid din.”-Jon Pareles, NY Times

“Screaming Females fire right down the middle between Husker Du, Damaged Black Flag and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and occupy more psychic space as an irreducibly solid three-piece than bands several times their age and weight combined.”-LA RECORD

“I mean, she could shred unlike anything I’ve ever seen live.”-Camden Andrews, NPR

“This is something unique. This is something vibrant. The Screaming Females have at the helm one of the hardest working axe-men in rock, and she roars, too. No one is going to tell them to get away.”-ImposeMagazine

“In a rare example of an opening band being every bit as awesome as the headliner, the New Jersey trio Screaming Females provided ample evidence that it was more than ready for the sudden leap it recently made from tiny, underground all-ages clubs to sold-out theaters as the Dead Weather’s hand-picked support.”-Jim DeRogatis, Chicago Sun-Times

“Marissa Paternoster starts singing, no, growling and screaming, before your now saucer-sized eyes, and you realize that she’s not there to just ‘look pretty,’ she’s there to eff you up and lay down some greasy guitar licks all over your face. Marissa no jokes plays the guitar like she made a deal with the devil himself to be able to do so.”-BUST

“Screaming Females’ live show sparks word-of-mouth like wildfire”-Venus

“The Screaming Females have been one of the most exciting and original bands to come out of New Brunswick since the Ergs crawled out of the basement scene in the early 00’s. But now…the band ratchets everything up a notch with the release of its third full-length album Power Move on Don Giovanni Records, already a buzz-worthy and much-blogged-upon contender for one of the most praised indie albums of the year.”-Jersey Beat

“While there’s only one screaming female in the group (the electrifying Marissa Paternoster, who just might be our generation’s official guitar hero), the name hints at the power and fury that comes out when this band hits play…It sounds totally familiar yet completely new-the fact that bands as diverse as Weezer, Sleater-Kinney, The Slits, and Spoon are cited as the band’s influence tells you everything and nothing about Screaming Females.”-NYLON

“Screaming Females is a rock trio from my home state of New Jersey. And like many NJ notables, these two guys and gal know how to rock.”-Teen Vogue

<alt="The Fresh & Onlys" />

The Fresh & Onlys

With their first release on Captured Tracks (and seventh official offering in less than two years of existence as a band) San Francisco’s The Fresh & Onlys have completely shed the shackles of the “garage rock” pigeonhole (a set of handcuffs which never fit them particularly well).

From the eruption of feedback that introduces “Diamond In The Dark”, the Onlys announce that something new is afoot. Anthemic rock’n'roll that only mid 90’s Guided By Voices or maybe the early Who were capable of. Big statements without studio trickery.

These new songs from the ever prolific Onlys are particularly remarkable since many were composed while singer/guitarist /co-songwriter Tim Cohen was unable to play guitar due to a broken hand. While on a brief tour backing obscure psych-folk troubadour Rodriguez, Tim managed to write on keyboards (mostly one handed) and the results opened yet another doorway into sounds the Onlys hadn’t explored. The title track “August In My Mind” is a prime example. There is a dark, swampy atmosphere complete with spaghetti western guitar leads from Wymond Miles that perfectly complement the late night at the bar feel that fuels much of the band’s work.

The new Fresh & Onlys EP, August in My Mind, contains the components that made their earlier recordings compelling (co-songwriter Shayde Sartin’s propulsive bass lines & melodic influence & drummer Kyle Gibson’s incredible time keeping and power) while also exploring new wave flourishes in great tracks like “Dreaming Is Easy” & “Garbage Collector.”

Touring extensively in 2010 with King Khan & The Shrines & in Europe surrounding the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival the always busy Fresh & Onlys will also be promoting a 3rd full length LP produced by Tim Green on In The Red later this year. Get caught in their maelstrom.

Woven Bones

The raw exuberance that Woven Bones seethes from its tightly-wound inner coil of turmoil isn’t exactly the stuff daydreams are made of, but as their menacing presence has been culminating over the past couple of years, it’s now clear as daylight that their finest efforts would come together on this, their debut LP. As they’ve effectively dragged the shards of their tattered souls with building ferocity on each of their previous singles and EPs, the evolutional process has honed itself to a fine edge, poised to level any contention and break into the blinding realness of now. They’ve finally harnessed the elusive throb and crash of their intended sonic perfection on their own terms, and this debut album will no doubt convert the middling masses into drooling slaves to their hypnotic heartbeat rhythm. What was only hinted at before is now as pure, raw, and ugly as a newborn jackal, squirming out of the wretched womb and ready to face the world, all the while, sending an evil chill down the spine and reminding you that yes, new music really can be this good.

Since the beginning, Woven Bones have primarily been the brainchild of singer/guitarist Andrew Burr from the point where their primordial ooze first seeped into our sphere of peripheral vision. After uprooting from Orlando in 2008 and settling in Austin, Texas last year, followed by touring the darkest corners of the underground stratosphere, their seedy and insidiously slithered drawl has fully come to a head, summoning the the pulse-pounding power to stand all hairs on-end. As bassist Matty and recently recruited drummer Carolyn have completed the fold, Woven Bones need no announcement to herald their arrival, but as their irresistibly iridescent hazy pop grime drills itself deeper into your soft skull, it’s best to just stand back and experience them exploding out of your speakers.

Like the eardrum-shattering noise pop icons that came before them, Woven Bones blaze their own trail of lascivious loudness and controlled snarl that’s just what the world needs right now, and the perfect soundtrack to your screwed-up summer. The debut album, In and Out and Back Again delivers nine heart-stabbing hits that just keep hitting back, so without further hesitation, we give you the debut album that explodes heads on contact, by your new favorite band, Woven Bones.

<alt="KISSES" />

KISSES

KISSES is a Los-Angeles based disco project featuring Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson.

Though primarily inspired by long-format, instrumental disco (Cerrone, Gino Soccio) KISSES has developed a uniquely concise songwriting style that is equal parts FM radio pop and expansive four-to-the-floor.

Early in life, Kivel developed a friendship with venerated cult disco producer Alec R. Costandinos, who rose to prominence in the late 1970s on a wave of ambitious concept albums and club singles. As Costandinos made available his knowledge and a healthy vinyl collection, the seeds for the KISSES album were sewn — the KISSES name chosen as a nod to Costandinos’ erstwhile ‘Love & Kisses’ project. As this creative relationship blossomed, Jesse took a day job as a travel writer to help make ends meet. His editors asked him to review hundreds of exotic hotels and resorts, many of which he had never seen or heard of before. The imagery used to write these reviews wove itself through the lyrics of songs like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Women of the Club’, as well as the overall sound of The Heart of the Nightlife.

The modern-day resurgence of Costandinos’ music, notably sampled on The Avalanches classic 2001 LP Since I Left You, allowed for an easy synthesis between current dance music trends (Lidstrom, Air France) and the panoramic ambitions of disco’s commercial golden age. Nine songs were composed for the project, each exhibiting a refined pop sensibility evocative of Arthur Russell’s later-period romantic works. There is a subconscious embrace of simple emotions and sentimentality on this record. It is a minimalist approach to pop music that revels in the celebratory moments of life, those fragments of time that we only remember in postcards or faint recollections. The Heart of the Nightlife takes these elusive moments and celebrates them openly, without fear of scorn.

Kisses will release their first single, Bermuda, on April 27th. It features the single and a remix by rising LA artist, Active Child. Future plans include DJ sets, SXSW parties, a full-length, and much more.

<alt="Summer Cats" />

Summer Cats

Melbourne Australia’s Summer Cats are keen students of POP in all of its flavors. From the motorik strum of Modern Lovers to the folky lilt of early Creation/Sarah label bands to the feedback-drenched noisy pop of the 00s, Summer Cats have got you covered. Their 2009 Slumberland album Songs For Tuesdays dazzled with its seemingly effortless song craft and sharp melodicism. Packed with proper tunes and confident vocals, it is one of the finest indiepop albums of recent memory.

Now Summer Cats are ready to release their first single since the album, and it’s a corker. “Your Timetable” is a well-honed slice of noise-pop, full of fuzz guitar, romping organ and a chorus to die for. Augmented by new second guitarist Jeremy Cole (from excellent Melbourne band The Zebras), Summer Cats turn “Your Timetable” into a glorious racket of barely-contained guitar squall and crashing drums - a perfectly infectious two minute pop gem.

On the flip we have live favorite “TV Guide” finally given the studio treatment. Showing another facet to Summer Cats pop sound, “TV Guide” is an organ-driven bopper featuring excellent vocals from Scott Stevens, restrained guitar jangle ‘n’ strum, and yet another indelibly catchy melody and chorus. With its charming minimalism, “TV Guide” could fit right in on an early Flying Nun compilation — a high compliment indeed. Jangly, fuzzy and catchy as hell, Summer Cats make brilliant pop records to dance and swoon to, and this fine single is sure to please fans of all things melodic and groovy.

“Songs for Tuesdays is an album anyone with a fondness for spiky, catchy, and super fun indie pop should own.”
