The great West Coast calls to Dominant Legs, and Dominant Legs, in turn, calls San Francisco home. Capitalizing on newfound free-time, as a result of being laid off from his job as an office assistant, Ryan Lynch began to write the glittering ballads and blurred-out pop songs that, with the addition of Hannah Hunt, make Dominant Legs. Lynch and Hunt, both San Francisco Bay Area-natives, were introduced through mutual friends and began collaborating when Hunt moved back to California after studying Architecture in New York. Lynch had been honing the band’s misty, nostalgic sound for a while, experimenting with songwriting as a kid and having spent the previous few years playing guitar in another SF band. Hunt spent her childhood singing and performing; her eternal passion for music led her to dive back in after years of not performing. With Lynch on guitar and vocals, and Hunt on vocals and keys, Dominant Legs’ sincere and dance-y pop songs tap into a sound that is at once naively sweet and self-consciously tragic.

About The Black Dirt Sessions:

Recorded late last year at Black Dirt Studios in upstate New York, The Black Dirt Sessions is a deeply personal record from Deer Tick and most especially from lead vocalist and songwriter John McCauley. It is the sound of a band coming into its own, finding its voice and pouring its collective heart out. The comparisons that have often been thrust upon McCauley by the press seem to fall away as his own voice comes through more clearly. On songs like “Goodbye, Dear Friend” and “Christ Jesus” which find McCauley alone at the piano, about as naked as you can possibly get on record. The Black Dirt version of “Christ Jesus,” which also appeared on War Elephant, manages to be even more devastating than the original.

Clearly, the band is exploring some darker material here (like death, mortality, the existence of God) than they’ve touched on in the past, and it suits them. Even as the Deer Tick live show has become legendary for its raucous, spontaneous moments, this record serves as proof of the band’s incredible musicianship, cohesive nature and most importantly gives us a chance to witness McCauley becoming a fully formed, mature songwriter right in front of our eyes (or ears).

Deer Tick has had an incredible couple of years. Early in 2009 the band had the unlikely support of NBC Nightly News’ Brian Williams, who has become one of the leading champions of Deer Tick via his BriTunes music site, alongside critics like David Fricke and Greil Marcus. The band was praised in just about every major music publication, with Rolling Stone going so far as to name them “the country-rock breakthrough of the year.” In their hometown of Providence, RI the band has gone beyond hometown hero status to hometown obsession. Deer Tick also became a steady favorite for many of our men and women in uniform, performing for Pentagon TV several times. Unlikely celebs like Rachael Ray and Joge Garcia of LOST have publicly shared their love of Deer Tick. Last Halloween, the band played an entire set of Sex Pistols songs in costume, flawlessly without a single rehearsal. The band played at festivals like Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, Joshua Tree Music Fest, Monolith, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Coachella, played Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and this year will make their debut appearance at Lollapalooza. They’ve toured with Dr. Dog, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Jason Isbell, The Felice Brothers as well as pals like Those Darlins and Dawes. A documentary film about the band, City of Sin, was also completed last year and should see the light of day in 2010. The band also recently contributed the track “Unwed Fathers” to Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine alongside My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, The Avett Brothers, etc.

“Deer Tick’s front man, John McCauley (top left), got an early start as a teenage singer-songwriter in Providence, a scene known for genre-busting noise music. But it’s country rock he’s plowed his old soul into, and on his band’s flat-out great forthcoming album, The Black Dirt Sessions, you hear not just heartbreak (”Christ Jesus” alone constitutes an album’s worth) but a hint of the tumbling-down noise of his hometown’s sound-much of it in his aching, ripped-to-shreds voice. Live, the band delivers hellfire.” - New York Magazine

“The best set yet from this still-rising Rhode Island quintet.” - BBC

“The songs are better, too. So good, in fact, they can make you punch the air or pin you to your seat. A giant leap forward.” - The Independent

“It’s hard to put into words what a band like this is now or could become without being too gushy” - CMT

Megafaun

August 23, 2010, Durham, NC - On-the-rise, Raleigh-based Megafaun and jazz big band Fight the Big Bull join with special guests Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Sharon Van Etten to record a live album of songs based on Alan Lomax’s seminal Sounds of the South collection. This three-night, Duke Performances-commissioned event will take place Friday, Saturday, Sunday, September 17 to 19, at Durham’s historic Hayti Heritage Center.

The Sounds of the South project brings together some of the most highly lauded performers from current neo-folk and jazz circles. Led by Bradley Cook, Joseph Westerlund, and Phillip Cook, Megafaun is at the center of an orbit that embraces, exalts, and connects the worlds of indie rock, folk, avant garde, and Americana. “Megafaun don’t just catalogue American musical languages, they breed them,” wrote Pitchfork in response to their widely-acclaimed 2009 album Gather, Form & Fly.

Following a landmark year of worldwide touring and the creation of a new mini-album, Heretofore (out September 14), Megafaun return home to explore new sonic terrain and to unite the past and the present, as only they can, via the Sounds of the South and a group of friends and collaborators: Fight the Big Bull, whose summer 2010 release with David Karsten Daniels NPR calls “Exuberant, messy, and glorious;” Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Megafaun’s former bandmate and the mind behind 2008’s immensely popular For Emma, Forever Ago; and Sharon Van Etten, who toured with Megafaun this Spring, was the opening act of 2010’s Pitchfork Music Festival, and whose second album, Epic, will be released this October.

Alan Lomax’s Atlantic Records-commissioned Sounds of the South collection archived some of the most compelling voices from the rural south of the early 20th century. With the help of Atlantic Records’ funds, Lomax was able to re-record some performers he’d worked with previously using much improved equipment. This collection-originally printed on 8 LPs-has remained vital to American music, mostly recently and popularly revisited in the soundtrack to the 2000 film Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? According to Bradley Cook of Megafaun, “we wanted to get inside some of the regional and influential voices of the Southeast…everyone was most inspired by the pieces from Sounds of the South.” After months of preparation, Megafaun and their team have resurrected and reinterpreted the sound, structure, and lyrics of these classic recordings — while preserving the songs’ timeless spirits.

Like The Hallelujah Train project of 2009 produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Blade, the three nights of the Sounds of the South performances at the acoustically exceptional Hayti Heritage Center will be recorded for release as an album sometime in 2011. The Center, a deconsecrated African Methodist Episcopal Church, has been the site of standout recordings by musicians including Branford Marsalis and Harry Connick, Jr.

Sounds of the South Participants:

Megafaun

North Carolina’s Joe Westerlund and brothers Brad and Phil Cook (singers, songwriters, composers, arrangers and improvisers all) find rarified intersections between bedrock folk and howling drone, between primal blues and cascading feedback, and between canyon rock and warped field recordings. Their 2009 album, Gather, Form & Fly, was praised by Rolling Stone for its “acoustic grace,” four-starred by the likes of SPIN and MOJO, and and declared “intriguing and heartfelt” in Pitchfork’s 8.1 acclamation. Their new record, Heretofore, is out this September on Hometapes.

“Megafaun’s roots are familiar, the bloom is uniquely theirs.” Four stars.
- ROLLING STONE

Fight the Big Bull’s 2008 debut, Dying Will Be Easy, earned the band feature spots on WNYC and NPR’s Fresh Air, and Popmatters.com listed the record among the year’s best. 2010 saw two releases from the band: All is Gladness in the Kingdom and I Mean to Live Here Still, the band’s collaboration with singer/songwriter David Karsten Dainels. The group’s upcoming work with Megafaun is part of their larger habit of collaborating; in addition to their work with Megafaun and Daniels, Fight the Big Bull also collaborated with trumpeter and composer Steven Bernstein.

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver

Justin Vernon is best known for his primary band, Bon Iver, and his critically acclaimed album For Emma, Forever Ago. Brad Cook, Phil Cook and Joe Westerlund of Megafaun are his earliest musical collaborators, having played together in the bands Mount Vernon and DeYarmond Edison throughout high school and college. Today they still perform on stage together in the soft-rock collective, GAYNGS. Justin lives in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Sharon Van Etten

For Sharon Van Etten’s work on her first album, 2009’s Because I Was in Love, she was praised for her “unerring sense for crafting memorable, seductive melodies” (Pitchfork.com). Brooklyn-based, Van Etten has toured nationally and turned in a stand-out performance on The Antlers’ 2009, highly-praised Hospice album.

“[Sharon Van Etten’s] voice is direct, unvarnished, the sound of truth.”

MIX TAPE: Violens Summer 2010 Mix Tape

Violens summon influences as diverse as 60s psych-pop, thrash metal, and Miami freestyle. Their music channels the sophistication of Roxy Music and the no-wave roar of Sonic Youth, all within the laughing nightmare spaces of Stanley Kubrick or Nobuhiko Obayashi. The New York-based 3-piece release their highly anticipated debut album Amoral November 2nd via Brooklyn label Friendly Fire Recordings and their own imprint Static Recital.

Producer/multi-instrumentalist Jorge Elbrecht, also a member of the art company Lansing-Dreiden, formed Violens in late 2007 as an additional outlet for his songwriting. Iddo Arad (synth) and Myles Matheny (guitar) complete the vocal harmonies, and currently join Elbrecht at the core of the group’s sound. Since releasing a self-titled EP in 2008, Violens have toured the US and Europe, performing with the likes of Grizzly Bear, Bat for Lashes and Deerhunter. Now, after furthering their studio prowess with remixes (MGMT, The Very Best), runway scores (Patrik Ervell, Yigal Azrouel), and a seasonal mixtape series showcasing their influences and collaborators, Violens have completed their extraordinary debut album.

“There are plenty of records we love that present a band in a more documentary way. We can definitely imagine a future Violens record sounding like that. But making Amoral was really about the songs being animated environments for people to cruise through–like a shark pool, or touch tank. Group vocal harmonies getting dragged out to sea by reverb or eaten by flames of distortion, choreographed call & response percussion, delayed shadows under certain instruments, animal noises, etc…” -V

Blending the ambient synths of Cocteau Twins and Sisters of Mercy with blistering guitar textures evoking Crass and Minor Threat, Amoral presents psychedelic sonic collages layered with 60’s vocal harmonies. The album shifts from the impossibly jaunty optimism of opener “The Dawn Of Your Happiness Is Rising” to the baroque doom of the nightmare described in the title track:

…And as I’ve never had a strong stomach for bloodshed and gore, it was all quite terrifying…
Perhaps the most horrific dream I can remember. At the same time, there was a euphoria to it all.
I recall the most vivid colors and patterns, lights and strange forms…

Amoral pulses through dream-pop crescendos (”Trance-Like Turn”), and epic washes of looping melody (”Generational Loss”). While goth-tropical recent single “Acid Reign” fits synthetic piano leads and frenzied guitars over dance bass lines and apparitional harmonies, “Violent Sensation Descends” veers from a vertiginous wash of synths into a chorus that could only have been written after overdosing on Zombies records. Self-recorded, self-produced, and self-mixed, Amoral is a collision of comfort and violence, cushion and crunch, attack and embrace. This is unforgettable music, full of possibility and unfathomable depth.

Violens’ new “Summer Mixtape” features their recent remixes of songs by Delorean and Nite Jewel, a Marine Girls cover (”He Got The Girl”), and unique mash ups and collaborations with Washed Out and Caroline Polachek (Chairlift), alongside tracks by Bethlehem, Dead Can Dance and Chapterhouse. Also included is a remix of the Amoral track “Another Strike Restrained” by Sadguitarius (Ben Goldwasser of MGMT).

The mixtape, and recent single “Acid Reign”, are available free for download at www.violens.net.

MP3: “Little Brown Haired Girls”

Frankie Rose has a reputation around here. And by here, we mean Brooklyn. And by reputation, we mean her minimal, Maureen Tucker-like beats and iconic presence in such buzz-stirring bands as Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls. Those groups spearheaded a scene that mixed the sounds of lo-fi garage, big reverb-drenched Phil Spector-produced 60s girl groups, the noise aesthetic of the Jesus And Mary Chain with a touch of Velvet Underground and a strong DIY ethic to create a sound that’s influenced a new generation of bands around the world.

At least that’s what she’s been known for up until now. As you’re about to hear on her new group’s self-titled Slumberland Records debut, Frankie Rose and the Outs have their heads in the clouds a bit more than Rose’s previous projects. Listening to the ghostly golden-oldie grooves of songs like “Girlfriend Island,” “Candy” and the pedal-pounding “That’s What People Told Me,” it’s as if the Cocteau Twins and Shangri-Las tracked a split LP with the help of a time machine and a freshly-acquitted Phil Spector.

“I tried to make this album as hi-fi as possible while sticking to the sounds that I’ve always loved,” explains Rose. “I grew up listening to a lot of musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan operas, so harmonies are a given. I also was drawn to anything spooky as a kid-’Good Vibrations’ still kinda scares me. Reverb puts a haze on everything, you know?”

Oh we know. And you will too, as the singer/guitarist/drummer-aided by fellow Outs bassist Caroline Yes, guitarist Margot Bianca, and drummer Kate Ryan- explores her dream-pop side on the album’s darker numbers, from the oscillating organs, spooky sleigh bells and melancholic melodies of “Hollow Life” and “Lullabye For Roads and Miles” to the disembodied balladry of “Save Me” and “Memo.”

All in the name of making “beautiful, serious music” that reaches well beyond simple Wall of Sound nods. That’s because Rose is more concerned with maintaining a specific mood than rehashing the hooks your parents lost their virginity to. Sometimes that means channeling the psych climaxes of Spacemen 3 (the chord-gnashing lead guitar of “Thee Only One,” Rose’s solo Slumberland single from 2009), and sometimes that can mean fusing a rickety rhythm section and galloping riffs with the spectral trails of Julee Cruise (the Rose-penned Vivian Girls cut, “Where Do You Run To?”).

Frankie Rose and the Outs is full of such lovely juxtapositions. From the galloping reverb symphony of “Little Brown Haired Girls” to the tough garage swing of “That’s What People Told Me” and “Don’t Tred” to the soaring chords and angelic harmonies of the well-chosen Arthur Russell cover “You Can Make Me Feel Bad,” it’s clear that Rose has finally found the perfect vehicle for her musical inspiration.

“To be honest, I like so much music,” says Rose, “and never know what influences are going to come out. For me, songwriting is more about evoking certain feelings than the lyrics or anything else. Hell, sometimes I don’t even know what the songs mean.”

Weekend photographed by Brian Vu

Daytrotter Session

Within a grainy film-still between a summer sunset and the end of times lies the post-punk squall of Weekend. Weekend filter the aggression, tempo and sneer of punk through a wall of reverb, haunting melody, feedback and primitive garage guitar. Formed in San Francisco in late 2009 by three childhood friends, the band have quickly developed a totally distinctive take on the history of post-punk noise rock. Some touchstones along the way include the chaotic psychedelic noise of groups like Skullflower and Terminal Cheesecake, the bad vibes power-drone of “Feed Me With Your Kiss”-era MBV and No Age, and the scything racket of post-No Wave noise bands Dustdevils and Sonic Youth.

Where many bands who share similar influences are content to bludgeon the listener with noise, Weekend pay special attention to texture and atmosphere, and leaven even the most riotous moments with unexpected shards of melody. Weekend have instinctively staked out a unique sonic territory where feedback guitars, crunching riffs and pounding rhythms are harnessed in the service of, rather than in opposition to, their haunting tunes. Says singer Shaun Durkan: “Our goal has always been to balance the abrasive qualities of punk and noise with something more introspective and vulnerable. Creating that simultaneous push and pull. Like the beauty of an oil fire.”

They’re rapidly developing a reputation for their stunning live shows, and gigs with bands like Japandroids, A Place To Bury Strangers, Little Girls and SF compatriots Young Prisms are drawing crowds of ever-increasing size and devotion. So far they have two ecstatically-received and now sold-out releases: a fantastic 10″ single on Mexican Summer and a split single with Young Prisms on the excellent UK label Transparent. Their debut double-LP Sports will be released November 9, 2010 on Slumberland Records.

Weekend are:

Press Quotes

“This Weekend does it better without the vampires. The trio’s post-punk cherry picking makes me feel like an easy mark. Their “All-American/”Youth Haunts” single is one of the bright spots of a very bright San Francisco scene, drawing heavily from the swoon school, but with the storming force of a punk mantra. The A-side is smoking, like Sonic Youth’s “Schizophrenia” filtered through the early Slumberland bands and with a kiss of Cure - listen to it as many times as I did this past and you’ll be wondering when these dudes blow up too.” - San Francisco Bay Guardian

“…what happens if No Age traded in good vibes and instead got real angry from the depths of a muffled cavern. It’s about four minutes of build up, windy moans and plodding drums giving way to a balls to the wall freakout as the whole song collapses on itself.” - Fader

“Easily one of our favorite bands to emerge in the past year, the trio’s infectious sound pays a certain homage to Psychocandy era Jesus Mary & Chain, with a similar pop sensibility and love for tinnitus-inducing feedback as the shoegaze pioneers. Despite having only a handful of released tracks and live appearances under their belt, the group has managed to make quite a name for themselves over the past year, landing opening spots for uber-hyped acts Japandroids and Little Girls, releasing a limited run 10″ on the in-demand label Mexican Summer and most recently playing tastemaker Gorilla Vs Bear’s insanely stacked SXSW showcase — all signs point to 2010 being the breakout year for the band.” - SFist

“…West coast Jesus & Mary Chain mutations have followed the secret treasure map to our heart with tracks that are as charmingly slack, dead eyed and authentically unhinged as these yet still so visceral, positively scorched out and hand-washed with distortion.” - Transparent Blog

Wild Nothing - Chinatown from Jack Tatum on Vimeo.

Wild Nothing, is the solo-project of Jack Tatum whose music is inspired by a longtime love affair with nostalgia. His debut full-length album, Gemini, released via Captured Tracks this past spring, is full of dreamy, carefree synth-pop songs that linger with an inexplicable sense of regret. This Fall the band will follow up Gemini with the Golden Haze EP, also on Captured Tracks.

Prior to embarking on this recent solo-project Tatum sang and played guitar with the Abe Vigoda-ish tropical punk band Facepaint and the singer/songwriter project Jack and The Whale. In the summer of 2009 The Virginia tech-college student decided to embark on his first creative-solo project playing bass, guitar, synthesizer and drums while recording in his home-studio. He soon emerged with a unique brand of dreamy pop-songs influenced by bands like, My Bloody Valentine, Shop Assistants, Go-Betweens and Cocteau Twins. In 2009 he delivered a memorable cover of the Kate Bush song “Cloudbusting,” making it clear that Wild Nothing transcended the lo-fi pop-mold.

On his debut album, Gemini, Tatum’s frail vocals come warped in an oozing neon haze. Carefully orchestrated synth-pop arrangements, trebly guitar riffs and tattered drum machines blend together to create an intriguing, texturally rich glo-pop album that could come only from the young at heart.

Midwesterners often feel obligated to apologize for/complain about their landscape. Chicago’s Light Pollution does not. The contrasting feelings of wonderment and isolation evoked by the frozen Midwestern plains deeply pervade their sound.

23-year-old songwriter James Cicero grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the son of Italian and Spanish Catholics. His grandfather was a poor trumpet player, and his father a strict military man. As a result, when Cicero bought his first guitar at the age of seventeen, his father took to locking it in the attic. Cicero left for college in Dekalb, IL, met drummer Matt Evert, obsessively wrote songs in class, and soon dropped out. Over the following years, the two honed their skills and sensibilities, eventually acquiring Nick Sherman and Jed Robertson; evolving into what is now Light Pollution.

Cicero wrote the album over the course of a long, stoned, agoraphobic winter spent isolated in a heatless warehouse west of Chicago. In a piss-poor living environment, filled with anxiety, he removed himself from the outside world and sought spirituality in seclusion. Lyrical themes developed within the warehouse walls. Various apparitions were translated into long ambient tape and synth drones. Dreams of the Virgin Mary resulted in late night sessions on an old church organ.

These strange happenings resulted in Light Pollution’s devestatingly beautiful and spiritually heavy debut album, Apparitions. Swirling analog synths, shimmering arpeggios, and washed out tape noise are embedded into combinations of 90’s shoegaze, chill-wave and vocal psych-pop. Thanks to a unique blend of hi-fi and lo-fi tracking and their Midwestern demeanor, they are able to create hazy, psychedelic, layered sounds that set them apart from recent waves of lo-fi pop bands.

Light Pollution released Apparitions on 6/15 via Carpark Records. The band has been on tour recently with Memoryhouse, Phantogram, Cults, and A Place To Bury Strangers, as well as random dates with Deerhunter, Best Coast, and Delorean. Tonight they kick off the next leg of their tour with Fol Chen and Crocodiles at The Echo in LA before meeting up with Casiokids for a run of dates starting in SF.

The LA show on 8/17 is being celebrated with a free compilation featuring exclusive songs from all the bands performing, including “Magic Kingdoms Kick My Teeth In” from Light Pollution, and can be downloaded in full here - http://heartmusicgroup.bandcamp.com/
