Papercuts

Papercuts

San Francisco’s Papercuts (aka Jason Quever) will issue its second album, Can’t Go Back on March 6 on the Gnomonsong label. Gnomonsong is owned and operated by Devendra Banhart and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic. Papercuts is only the fourth artist to be signed to the imprint, alongside labelmates Jana Hunter, Feathers and Rio En Medio. Papercuts will launch a nationwide US tour with Grizzly Bear in Seattle on Feb. 16 at Neumo’s.

Can’t Go Back is the marriage of timeless songs, richly textured studio sounds, classic rock/pop hookery, and focused narratives. Delivered through Jason’s warm voice and layered lucid melodies, these songs attempt to deal with the reality of a world beyond one’s control. Yet from the kid in “Outside Looking In” who’s best friend has gotten hip to weed and moved on to a new click, to the woman in “Dear Employee” who is forced to accept that her affair with her cruel employer has run it’s course, “and anyway you’re not the first”, the tone throughout remains surprisingly hopeful and explorative.

Before this Quever was raised in a commune in Humboldt County, orphaned, moved up and down the US West Coast before calling San Francisco home. Since breaking in through the window of a vacationing friends apartment with an 8 track to record piano tracks for Cass McCombs’ “Not The Way” in 2002, Quever has been playing with and/or recording other friends’ bands such as Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Skygreen Leopards, as well as Vetiver, and considers working intimately with such contemporary songwriters to be a significant influence, along with the standard luminous 20th century figures we all know and love.

Can’t Go Back track list:

1. Dear Employee
2. John Brown
3. Summer Long
4. Unavailable
5. Take the 227th Exit
6. Outside Looking In
7. Sandy
8. Just Another Thing to Dust
9. Found Bird
10. The World I Love

Panther preps debut full-length for Fryk Beat, spreads floor-dancing craze

Panther

Panther

Charlie is Panther, and Panther is some mutant form of Charlie. Churning out shattered pop hits that few have the ears to comprehend, Portland, OR’s Panther is a one-man disaster squad. Panther’s music is hard match of damaged soul, falsetto disco and broken synth fueled freakouts which is as addictive as it is challenging. This solo affair of Charlie Salas-Humara isn’t easily ignored for his unpredictable and energetic solo performances tainted with throbbing bass, minimalistic hooks and jittery dance routines. Panther’s influences run deep and take as much from Pop and R&B as Free Jazz and Punk.

In the past year Panther has infiltrated MTV2 (up for Video of the Year), Spin Magazine, and modern dance academia. While touring with both Ratatat and Gossip, he has managed to polarize audiences thoroughly between the immediate super-fans and super confused gawkers. Panther live is as much dance as it is music and as much art as it is performance.

Secret Lawns is the eagerly anticipated full-length follow up from last year’s Yourself 12”. Listening to Secret Lawns you’ll discover Charlie knows no boundaries, not only in terms of genre but also social and societal. Panther recorded and played all of the instruments himself, excluding the guest accompaniments from members of YACHT, White Rainbow, Plants, Point Line Plane, and E*Rock on a few of the tracks.

The first 1000 copies of Secret Lawns come with a limited edition DVD which features several videos as well as the debut of Floor Dancing.

Stay tuned for Spring 2007 tour dates, including SXSW.

Panda Bear announces track list, street date for 3rd solo album

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Panda Bear

Panda Bear

Animal Collective member Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox) boldly returns with his long-awaited third solo record Person Pitch (street date: March 20, 2007 on Paw Tracks). Years in the making, Person Pitch marks a dramatic departure from Panda Bear’s previous solo record Young Prayer. The acoustic instruments of Young Prayer have been replaced with samplers and electronics.

Fusing Panda’s dramatic life changes over the past few years (marriage, moving to Lisbon, becoming a father) with his ever-increasing sonic palette (standouts include Caetano Veloso, Berlin Techno, Scott Walker, and Kylie Minogue), Person Pitch is suffused with the kind of feel good modern toe-tapping pop that seems harder and harder to find these days. Four tracks from Person Pitch will or have already been released on vinyl on three different labels - Paw-Tracks, Fat Cat and UUAR.

Paw Tracks feels that the passing of time will show Panda Bear’s Person Pitch sitting alongside the great solo albums of Paul McCartney, George Michael, and Ghostface Killah. Luckily we don’t have to wait.

Panda Bear will be touring in the Spring and Summer - stay tuned for tour dates.

Track list:

1.Comfy In Nautica
2.Take Pills
3.Bros
4. I’m Not
5. Good Girl
6. Carrots
7. Search For Delicious
8. Ponytail

Classic Sebadoh line-up announces first tour in 14 years

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Sebadoh

Sebadoh

The classic Sebadoh line-up of Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney and Jason Loewenstein has re-united and will tour the US for the first time in 14 years in the spring of 2007. The band’s line-up changed quite frequently over the years, but the trio of Barlow / Gaffney / Loewenstein was responsible for the classic 90s albums III, Bubble and Scrape and Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock. All three members contributed their own unique songwriting styles and also switched instruments frequently, which they will also do on this tour. III, which is considered by many to be the band’s definitive album, got the deluxe re-issue treatment courtesy of the Domino label last year. Domino has also announced plans to re-issue the Barlow / Gaffney-penned album The Freed Man later in 2007. Expect a set list drawing from all eras of Sebadoh’s existence.
