The Weird Weeds explore Weird Feelings, tour

The Weird Weeds

The Weird Weeds

Austin, TX band The Weird Weeds will release its second full-length, Weird Feelings, on the Sounds are Active label on August 22. The band will launch a national tour in September, with a few scattered Texas shows between now and then.

Since their inception, The Weird Weeds have been carving out a musical space for themselves that is unlike anything else around them. Weird Feelings further explores the nature of their individuality, showcasing a much more refined and fully realized sound than on their previous releases.

Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the music of Weird Feelings is inspiring both in the subtlety of its craft and the immediacy of its emotional impact, packing more ideas into 90 seconds than most bands do in a song three times that length. It is the result of relentless performing and songwriting as well as a firm commitment to faith in their own imaginations. With Weird Feelings, The Weird Weeds have established themselves as an important voice in the worlds of both pop and experimental music. They utilize the best of each genre while adhering to the constraints of neither.

Outside of The Weird Weeds drummer and vocalist Nick Hennies has performed with Jandek, Arnold Dreyblatt, and Castanets while guitarist Aaron Russell is a member of Nashville’s legendary The Cherry Blossoms and previously joined members of Deerhoof in THETEETHE. Finally, guitarist and vocalist Sandy Ewen performs and records alongside Tom Carter under the name Spiderwebs.

Sufjan Stevens announces fall tour dates with My Brightest Diamond

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens

For the first time in over a year, Sufjan Stevens is going on tour, bringing with him a talented group of musicians and friends including a small string ensemble and brass section.

They will perform a repertoire of familiar songs from Seven Swans, Michigan and Illinois in a new symphonic context. The tour will bring Sufjan and his ensemble to some of the country’s finest theaters, including Nashville’s esteemed Ryman and Los Angeles’ historic Wiltern.

The pomp and pageantry of the previous Illinoisemakers tour will be augmented by a nuance, mastery and sophistication of talented new players. But don’t expect to see any cheerleading uniforms or routines. Suit coats, neckties and corsages might be more appropriate; but we aren’t about to issue a dress code.

Sufjan would also like to take this opportunity on tour to debut a few new pieces.

Supporting the tour will be My Brightest Diamond, a moniker for the talented singer-songwriter Shara Worden. Shara has toured extensively in Sufjan’s band, appears on his recordings, and is often his right-hand woman. Shara is also a close friend, creative peer and Brooklyn neighbor to Sufjan.

My Brightest Diamond’s debut album, Bring Me The Workhorse will be released on Asthmatic Kitty Records on August 22nd.

The Worker’s Institute expands roster, releases Sigur Ros EP/DVD

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros

After its first year of existence as a label that only released Icelandic instrumental music (from Amiina, Johann Johannsson, etc.), the Los Angeles-based Worker’s Institute label is expanding with four exciting new records for the fall, from new signings My Latest Novel and Peter and the Wolf, as well as EPs from Amiina and Sigur Ros.

The first release of 2006 will be Sigur Ros’ Saeglopur EP and DVD on August 8th, (pre-release via iTunes on July 11th). Saeglopur features one track from Takk and three new, intimate recordings that expand upon the music Sigur Ros released on their Baba Tiki Dido EP and on their Untitled EP. This release is in partnership with the band’s own Krunk label and Filter US Recordings. It will also have a separate DVD with three beautiful and engaging videos.

Sigur Ros Saeglopur EP Track List:

Disc One – Audio:

1.Saeglopur
2.Refur
3.O Fridur
4.Kafari

Disc Two – Video / DVD

1.Saeglopur
2.Glosoli
3.Hoppipolla

In September The Worker’s Institute will release Lightness, the first official album from the Austin, Texas based Peter and the Wolf. The band has some self-released CD-Rs that have been well circulated but this will be the band’s first proper release. The band has been garnering much national attention this summer for its upcoming sailboat tour of the East Coast. Red Hunter, singer and mastermind behind the band, found himself with sudden cult status after his performances last year which took place in off-radar venues like graveyards, abandoned buses, under bridges, and even an island the audience could only reach by canoe. Peter and the Wolf is currently on a US tour that features a pick-up band or “junk orchestra” comprised of local musicians and friends joining the band in each city.

Peter and the Wolf tour dates:

7.06 San Diego, Scolari’s Office
7.07 Los Angeles, The Echo
7.08 Los Angeles, Il Corral

The third new signing, slated for an October release, is Glasgow-based five piece and UK press darlings, My Latest Novel. The NME has favorably compared them to the Arcade Fire, while Mojo referred to them as a cross between Belle and Sebastian and the Velvet Underground. The album Wolves will see its first release in the States, having already been issued in Europe by Bella Union.

Also in October, the Workers Institute will release a 3-song single from the band Amiina, the title of which is TBA. It features the song “Seoul” from their upcoming full-length album (set for a 2007 release) and two b-sides. Amiina fans know “Seoul” as the song from the live set (they are most often seen opening for Sigur Ros) that most prominently features the musical saw.

Sigur Ros and Amiina are on tour in Europe through July 17th.
